What is Infertility ?
A couple is said to be having infertility/subfertility, if they are unable to conceive even after a year of regular, unprotected intercourse. About 85-90 % couples are able to get pregnant by the end of one year. Only, the remaining 10-15% couples need some help for getting pregnant.
Infertility or Subfertility can be an extremely emotional and socially stressful condition for a couple. Varies misconceptions about the fertility and the social taboo associated with the infertility makes it a very challenging situation for the couple. However, the advancement in the field of Reproductive Medicine has made it possible for millions of couples across the globe to experience the joy of parenthood.
During Natural conception, impregnation usually occurs through intercourse. Millions of sperm are ejaculated by the male in the upper part of the vagina. These sperm travel from vagina, via uterus, to the fallopian tube. In fallopian tube they meet the egg (Ovum). Many sperm surround an egg, but only one sperm the egg and is able to fertilize it. Rest of sperm only facilitate the entry of this sperm into the egg. The fertilized egg, now called Zygote, divides multiple times to form an embryo. This embryo nestles in the lining of the womb (the uterus) and thereafter, develops into a baby.
Infertility occurs when the sperm and egg are unable to fuse together due to one reason or another. However, reproduction is a complex process involving a number of steps, both in male as well in female. Many of these steps in human beings are inherently inefficient and vulnerable. This culminates into significantly lower fertility, even in normal healthy population as compared to A female, normally, produces only one egg during her each menstrual cycle. Therefore, it is very important for humans to have coitus during the time when the egg is released from the ovary into the tubes (ovulation). Coitus during the other time of the menstrual cycle does not results in pregnancy. Therefore, it is very important for a female to have an idea of her “Fertile Period”, when her chances of getting pregnant are maximum. This can be roughly calculated by our fertility day calculator.
Infertility/subfertility can be due to multiple reasons. It may be due to problem with egg, sperm, uterus, tube, genetics, and environmental factors. Sometimes no cause is identified (Unexplained Infertility). Incidence of infertility due to male factors and female factors are equal. Therefore, both the partners need evaluation together.
Over the past few decades, the field of Reproductive Medicine has undergone a revolution with the introduction of the technologies, which has helped millions of the couples to experience the joy of being “Mother and Father”.
